I’ve been thinking some more about what it means to love God with all your soul. To express love to God with our soul, means a desire to keep our soul pure and holy before him. It is our response of love, to the gift that he gave us – holiness through Christ.

Every fiancee loves having a diamond ring. But no bride-to-be takes her diamond ring and drags it through the mud, or covers it with paint. Rather, and i’ve seen this, they’ll spend endless amounts of time polishing it, looking at it, watching it sparkle and shine. Why? Well, because it’s valuable to her. And at the same time, it’s precious to her because it’s from her beloved.

Jesus’ gift to us was holiness. So instead of dragging our lives again through the mud, we should instead, shine out as stars in the darkness, living and choosing purity – not because we are morally superior – but because of our love for Christ and what he’s done for us.

1 John 1:5-7 says:

God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. 6 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

If you’ve got time this week, spend some time reading through 1 John and meditating on all the goodness in there. The richness of God’s love for us inspires us to love Him with all our soul.
