The scene is: the night before the Passover Feast. It was also 24 hours before Jesus’ crucifixion. Halfway through dinner, Jesus stands up, takes off his outer garments, takes a towel, wraps himself with it, and with a basin of water, one by one, starts to wash the disciples’ feet. During Jesus’ time, the culture was for guests to have their feet washed by servants upon arrival at the host’s house.
Back then they didn’t have Nike Air’s, so people had to make do with sandals. The disciples’ feet most likely would have smelt like a pig sty. So why did Jesus endure the stench, and perform such a menial task? Would you do something similar for others?
